Have We Made Fitness Success Too Complicated?

Have you ever felt like you're constantly chasing the next fitness goal?

Lose a bit more weight.

Lift a bit heavier.

Run a bit faster.

Eat a little "cleaner."

It sometimes feels like there's always something else we should be aiming for.

And if we're not making constant progress, it's easy to feel like we're failing.

But lately, I've found myself asking a different question...

Have we made fitness success far more complicated than it needs to be?

When did success become so complicated?

Scroll through social media for five minutes and you'll probably see transformation photos, extreme challenges, strict diets and workout plans that seem to take over people's lives.

Now don't get me wrong—there's nothing wrong with having big goals. If training for a marathon, completing an Ironman or lifting your heaviest weight ever excites you, go for it.

I've done some of those things myself, and they've been incredible experiences.

But somewhere along the way, I think we've started believing that these are the only ways to measure success.

That if we're not constantly pushing harder, doing more or chasing the next milestone, then somehow we're not doing enough.

I don't believe that's true.

What if success looked different?

What if success wasn't about perfection?

What if it looked like...

  • Having the energy to play with your children or grandchildren after work.

  • Walking upstairs without getting out of breath.

  • Feeling strong enough to carry the shopping without thinking twice.

  • Feeling confident enough to walk into the gym for the first time.

  • Sleeping better because you're moving your body regularly.

  • Going on holiday knowing your body is capable of the adventures you want to have.

  • Feeling stronger this month than you did last month.

None of those moments will probably go viral on Instagram.

But every single one of them has the power to change your life.

To me, that's what real success looks like.

The biggest lesson coaching has taught me

One of the biggest things I've learned from coaching people over the years is that the happiest clients aren't always the ones who lose weight the quickest.

They're the people who slowly build habits that fit into their lives.

They stop thinking about being "on a fitness plan."

Exercise becomes something they enjoy rather than something they have to do.

They start trusting themselves.

They become stronger.

More confident.

More capable.

Not because they found the perfect programme, but because they found something they could actually stick to.

And that's where the magic happens.

Why I coach the way I do

That's exactly why I created Built For Real Life.

I don't believe fitness should take over your life.

I believe it should enhance it.

Life is busy.

Work gets hectic.

Family needs you.

Holidays happen.

Some weeks you'll train four times.

Other weeks you might only manage one.

That doesn't mean you've failed.

It means you're living a real life.

My job as a coach isn't to expect perfection.

It's to help you keep moving forward, whatever life throws at you.

Every programme I create is built around the person, not around an ideal week that only exists on paper.

Because no two people have the same life.

So why should they all follow the same plan?

So... what does success look like?

Maybe it's not another number on the scales.

Maybe it's having the confidence to try something you've always wanted to do.

Maybe it's feeling healthier than you did six months ago.

Maybe it's saying yes to a weekend hike without worrying if you'll manage it.

Maybe it's having enough energy left at the end of the day to enjoy the people around you.

Maybe success isn't about creating a completely different life.

Maybe it's about building a stronger body so you can enjoy the life you already have.

And if you ask me...

That's a version of success worth aiming for.

If this way of thinking resonates with you, I'd love to help.

My online coaching is built around real people with real lives. No one-size-fits-all programmes. No expectation of perfection. Just personalised coaching, ongoing support and a plan that adapts as life changes.

Because fitness should fit around your life—not the other way around.
